Veteran newspaper executive Joseph Pepe has been named VP regional director of Civitas Media’s East Region. The announcement was made Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016 by CEO Ralph Martin.
Pepe will lead all operations in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky and West Virginia. He will be based in North Carolina.
“Joe is a consummate professional with deep, rich experience,” Martin said. “He’s a leader and motivator, and knows how to operate in a complex industry. I’m confident he can position our business for future success.”
Pepe has worked in multiple markets for more than three decades. Most recently, he was president of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette where he directed the business and operations functions of the organization including advertising, marketing, finance, HR, production and distribution.
He also served as president and publisher of the Commercial Appeal in Memphis, Tenn. Other executive roles include newspapers in St. Louis, San Bernardino, Calif., Munster, Ind., Nashville, Tenn., Bellingham, Wash., and El Paso, Texas.

Pepe attended the University of Oklahoma where he earned his bachelor of arts in Journalism, then the University of Texas-El Paso for his MBA studies.
Pepe and his wife, Julie, have two children, Nick and Mike.
